Yelp?s Post-IPO Earnings: $27.4M in Revenue, Up 66% From A Year Earlier, But Net Loss Triples

yelp logoIn its first ever earnings report as a publicly-traded company, Yelp said it earned $27.4 million in revenue, up 66 percent from the $16.5 million it made in the same time a year ago. However, the company more than tripled its net losses, mostly on rising costs associated with supporting a larger sales staff. It lost $9.8 million, up from the $2.7 million it lost in the same time a year earlier. That loss of 31 cents per share was about double what analysts had estimated. Analysts had predicted a loss of 15 cents per share, according to a Bloomberg survey. Looking at the sheet, Yelp’s loss expanded mostly on sales, marketing and administrative costs. Sales and marketing costs rose to $18.8 million, up from $11.3 million the year before. On the earnings call, the company said much of this headcount growth came from international expansion, which it has yet to fully monetize. In the first quarter, Yelp launched in 11 new markets, eight of which were international.

Bizarre internal Apple video shows Steve Jobs rallying the troops against IBM

Image

We’re going to warn you up front: what you’re about to see is eccentric, puzzling, and perhaps even disturbing. And undoubtedly, it’s the fanboy film to end all fanboy films. According to Network World, who managed to get ahold of an internal ‘rally the troops’ video, the referenced clip was produced with a $50,000 budget and shown to an international sales force at a 1984 meeting in Hawaii. The film, entitled “1944,” was purportedly provided by one-time Apple employee Craig Elliott, now CEO of Pertino Networks. The vintage footage shows then-CEO Steve Jobs as Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and the nine minute film drags on to show Apple-clad soldiers lining up to do battle with IBM — a massive, massive rival in the space during that era. The full watch can be found in the source link below (embedding was disabled), and again, this will absolutely freak you out. Fair warning.

OMGWHAT? GREE Acquires Mobile-Social Game Developer Funzio For $210M

funzioJapanese gaming giant GREE just acquired mid-core, mobile game developer Funzio for $210 million in an all-cash deal that should boost its ability to build games for Western audiences. Funzio is behind Crime City, Modern War and Kingdom Age, which are graphical RPGs that have had more than 20 million downloads on Apple’s iOS, Android or Facebook platforms. I had heard a few weeks back that Funzio was in a fundraising process at a $350 million post-money valuation and had also been loosely talking to various buyers in an auction-style process. Apparently, the fundraising efforts helped tip Funzio into a sale, but maybe not at the valuation I had originally heard about. Still, $210 million is not bad at all, considering that the company had raised about $20 million to date from IDG Ventures and Playdom co-founder Rick Thompson. For comparison, Draw Something-maker OMGPOP went to Zynga for $180 million in cash plus an undisclosed earnout. Why did GREE buy Funzio? GREE is a multi-billion dollar mobile gaming company from Japan that is trying to break into Western markets. Its profit margins put Zynga to shame, but the company is running out of room to grow as its home country becomes saturated.

Not only does the “Men in Black” movie franchise boast great acting and stunning visual effects, each of the three films features a pretty kicking soundtrack as well. For “Men in Black 3,” which hits theaters May 25, Pitbull contributes the lead single, “Back in Time.”

MTV News caught up with Mr. Worldwide on the Los Angeles set of the “Back in Time” video and he gave us a pretty cool walk-through.

“What we’re doing here, to sum it up in layman’s terms, is making history,” Pit said. “The concept is basically all about the movie. The slogan for the movie is ‘Back in Time.’ In the record I say, ‘In order to understand the future we have to go back in time.’ ”

The clip not only features “MIB3″ movie scenes, it was actually filmed on the movie set, blending the Miami rapper’s performance shots seamlessly into Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ action shots. “As far as the sets that you see right now, it’s just integrating and running parallel with everything that you see in the movie,” Pitbull explained.

It was the Fresh Prince himself who recorded the theme songs — 1997′s “Men in Black” and 2002′s “Black Suits Comin’ ” — for the first two installments of the “MIB” trilogy. For the upcoming flick, Pit took over and used a sample of Mickey and Sylvia’s 1950s classic “Love Is Strange” for inspiration.

Now that he’s clocked his first collaboration with Big Willie, Pitbull hopes that they can work together some more. “I would love to follow in Will Smith’s footsteps,” he said. “We’re working on the music for the movie, and hopefully, one day, we’ll work in a movie together.”

What do you think of Pitbull’s “Back in Time” video? Tell us in the comments!
